Abstract

Apparatus and methods for improved efficiency in accessing meta-data in a storage controller of a virtualized storage system. Features and aspects hereof walk and retrieve meta-data for one or more other I/O requests when retrieving meta-data for a first I/O request.

How it works

Improves storage controller efficiency through look-ahead metadata retrieval. When processing a first I/O request, the system simultaneously retrieves metadata for subsequent queued requests stored nearby in memory. This cached metadata eliminates repeated traversal of complex hierarchical metadata structures — particularly valuable in systems with synchronous mirroring and snapshot management where metadata chains are deep.
